Canada vs Qatar — Match Day Guide (June 18, 2026)

This is the big one. Canada's first World Cup match on home soil in Vancouver. BC Place will be deafening. Here is everything you need to know.

Match Details

  • Date: Thursday, June 18, 2026
  • Kickoff: 3:00 PM PDT
  • Venue: BC Place, Vancouver
  • Round: Group B, Match Day 2
  • Capacity: 54,500

This is Canada's first of two group-stage matches in Vancouver. The second is vs Switzerland on June 24.

Getting There

By SkyTrain (The Only Way)

Take the Expo Line to Main Street–Science World Station. On match days, this is the only accessible route to BC Place. Yaletown-Roundhouse and Stadium-Chinatown are open but NOT connected to the stadium pedestrian route.

  • Trains run every ~2 minutes during match periods
  • Walk the "Last Mile" pedestrian corridor along Quebec Street and Pacific Boulevard to the stadium's south entrance
  • The Last Mile is a party — cultural activations, performance stages, and themed environments

Timing

  • Gates open: Typically 2–3 hours before kickoff (expect 12:00–1:00 PM)
  • Arrive at Main Street–Science World by 1:00 PM at the latest for a 3 PM kickoff
  • The SkyTrain will be packed. Budget extra time.

DayPass

$11.95 for unlimited rides all day. You can also tap your Visa, Mastercard, or Amex directly at fare gates — no Compass Card needed.

Before the Match

Where to Eat (Walking Distance to BC Place)

Quick and affordable:

  • Costco Food Court (Expo Blvd) — $1.50 hot dog, open to non-members at the food court window. 5-minute walk from BC Place.
  • Japadog (Robson or Burrard) — Japanese-fusion hot dogs, $7–10. A Vancouver institution.

Sit-down:

  • Tap & Barrel (Olympic Village) — Waterfront patio, burgers and beer. 10-minute walk.
  • Craft Beer Market (Olympic Village) — 100+ beers on tap, big screens. Will be packed. Arrive by noon.

Halal options:

Pre-Game Atmosphere

The Granville Street pedestrian zone (5 blocks, car-free) will be buzzing from morning. Expect Canadian supporters' groups gathering downtown from late morning. The Last Mile walk from Main Street–Science World is designed as a pre-game fan experience.

If You Do Not Have Tickets

This will be the single busiest day of the FIFA Fan Festival.

FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park

  • Free entry, 25,000 capacity
  • Giant screens, live music, food and drink
  • Arrive by 11:00 AM or earlier. For a 3 PM kickoff of Canada's home match, this will reach capacity.
  • Take the Expo Line to 29th Avenue Station → PNE shuttle bus

Granville Island Viewing Zone

  • Free, 1,000 capacity, family-friendly
  • Food trucks, beer garden
  • Bus #50 or Aquabus ferry from Olympic Village (~$5)

Bars and Restaurants

Every bar downtown with a screen will be showing this match. Get there early — very early. By 1 PM, most will be standing room only.

After the Match

If Canada Wins

Granville Street is going to be chaos in the best way. The pedestrian zone will turn into a spontaneous celebration. Expect it to run until late.

Getting Home

  • SkyTrain has pre-positioned empty trains at Main Street–Science World for the post-game rush
  • Expect a 20–40 minute wait to board immediately after the final whistle
  • Walk north toward Stadium-Chinatown or Waterfront stations for potentially shorter waits (they are open for regular transit, just not connected to the stadium pedestrian route)
  • Uber/Lyft surge pricing will be extreme. Budget $40–60+ for what is normally a $15 ride.

Late Plans

  • Granville Street pedestrian zone — live music and patios until late
  • Yaletown — craft cocktail bars and restaurants, 5-minute walk from BC Place
  • Gastown — Steam Clock, cobblestone streets, good pubs. 15-minute walk. Stay on Water Street — do not walk east toward Hastings at night.

Weather Check

Mid-June in Vancouver: expect 17–20°C (63–68°F) at 3 PM. There is a chance of rain. BC Place has a retractable roof so the match will be fine, but the Last Mile walk and fan zones are outdoors. Bring a light rain layer just in case.
