Vancouver World Cup Guide for Australian Fans

Updated: March 29, 2026 | Category: Fan Guides

Australia kicks off the World Cup in Vancouver on June 13. You have flown halfway around the world. Here is how to make the most of it.

Your Matches

Australia plays the opening Vancouver match:

  • Australia vs UEFA Playoff Winner — June 13, 9:00 PM PT at BC Place (Group D)

This is the first World Cup match at BC Place. The atmosphere will be historic. If you are in the stadium for this one, you are part of Vancouver World Cup history.

Other matches at BC Place you might want to catch:

  • Canada vs Qatar — June 18, 3:00 PM
  • New Zealand vs Egypt — June 21, 6:00 PM
  • Switzerland vs Canada — June 24, 12:00 PM
  • New Zealand vs Belgium — June 26, 8:00 PM

If the Socceroos advance, knockout round matches in Vancouver are July 2 and July 7.

Time Zone Reality

Vancouver is on Pacific Time (UTC-8). That means:

| Vancouver | Sydney (AEST) | Perth (AWST) | |---|---|---| | 9:00 PM | 2:00 PM next day | 12:00 PM next day | | 3:00 PM | 8:00 AM next day | 6:00 AM next day | | 12:00 PM | 5:00 AM next day | 3:00 AM next day |

Your body clock will be wrecked for the first 2-3 days. The good news: the 9:00 PM kickoff for Australia's first match gives you a full day to adjust (or at least to be functioning on caffeine).

Jet lag strategy: Fly in at least 2 days before the match. Force yourself to stay up until 10 PM Vancouver time on your first night. Coffee is everywhere. You will survive.

Best Pubs for Aussies

You are going to want a pub that feels like home. Vancouver does not have traditional Australian pubs, but these come close:

The Cambie (Cambie St) — 5-min walk from BC Place Backpacker central. Cheap pitchers, no pretence, packed with travellers from everywhere. This will be Aussie HQ during the World Cup. Guarantee it.

The Pint (Granville St) — 10-min walk Big, loud, every game on screen. Multiple floors. The kind of place where you will end up singing with strangers.

Shark Club (West Georgia St) — 8-min walk Proper sports bar with good sight lines to every screen. More organized than The Cambie, less rowdy than The Pint.

Tap & Barrel (Olympic Village) — 12-min walk If you want craft beer and a waterfront patio with mountain views, this is it. Not a pub vibe, but the beer is excellent and the view is unbeatable.

Yaletown Brewing — 7-min walk Brewpub with house-made beer. Solid food. Good middle ground between dive bar and fancy.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Alcohol is more expensive in Canada than Australia. Expect $8-10 CAD for a pint ($9-11 AUD). Happy hours exist but are less common. Pre-game at your accommodation if budget is tight.

Food

Vancouver food is excellent and diverse. Quick recommendations:

  • Japadog — Japanese hot dogs. Sounds weird, tastes incredible. A Vancouver institution.
  • Ramen Danbo — Best ramen near downtown. Perfect after a cold evening match.
  • Sal y Limon — Mexican food. Massive portions.
  • White Spot — A BC chain. Try the Legendary Burger with "Triple O" sauce. It is the closest thing Vancouver has to a cultural food institution.
  • Tim Hortons — You must try a double-double (coffee with two cream, two sugar) and a box of Timbits at least once. It is a Canadian rite of passage.

Practical Stuff

Currency: Canadian Dollar. Roughly 1 AUD = 0.90 CAD (check current rates). Everything is more expensive than you expect. Budget $50-80 CAD per day for food and drink.

Tipping: 15-20% at restaurants. This is mandatory in practice. Servers earn below minimum wage and rely on tips. Do not skip it.

Phone: Your Australian SIM will work but roaming charges are brutal. Buy a prepaid Canadian SIM at the airport from Chatr or Lucky Mobile ($25-35/month with data) or use an eSIM like Airalo.

Weather: Vancouver in June is 18-22 C (much cooler than Australian summer). Evenings drop to 12-15 C. Bring a light jacket for the 9 PM kickoff. It will not rain (probably).

Power: Canada uses the same plug type as Australia? No. Canada uses Type A/B (flat prongs, like the US). You WILL need a travel adapter. Buy one at the airport or bring one from home.

Transit: The SkyTrain is your best friend. Get a Compass Card, load $20-30, and you can get anywhere. BC Place is at Stadium-Chinatown Station. Read our full transit guide.

The Aussie Fan Meetup

We are setting up a WhatsApp group for Australian fans in Vancouver. Join to coordinate:

  • Pre-match pub meetups (The Cambie, opening night, be there)
  • Group outings on non-match days (Grouse Mountain, Granville Island, Whistler day trips)
  • Post-match celebrations (or commiserations)

Things to Do When There is No Match

Vancouver is genuinely one of the best cities in the world for outdoors:

  • Grouse Mountain — Gondola ride with city views. 30 min from downtown.
  • Granville Island — Public market, craft beer, waterfront. Take the little ferry from Yaletown.
  • Stanley Park — Massive urban park with a seawall walk. Rent a bike and do the 10 km loop.
  • Capilano Suspension Bridge — Touristy but impressive. 30 min from downtown by bus.
  • Whistler — 2-hour drive. World-class mountain village. Worth a day trip if you have time.
  • Craft brewery crawl — Main Street and East Van have 15+ breweries within walking distance of each other.

Match Day Essentials

The Send-Off

You are travelling 12,000 km to watch the Socceroos play in a World Cup. That makes you a proper fan. Vancouver is going to love having you. The city is safe, beautiful, and full of good beer.

Wear the green and gold. Be loud. And for the love of sport, do not call it soccer while you are here. Actually, in Canada, they will not care either way.

See you at The Cambie on June 13. First round is on whoever scores first.
