New Zealand Fans in Vancouver — World Cup 2026 Guide

Kia ora! New Zealand has two group-stage matches in Vancouver, which means you are going to get to know this city. Good news: Vancouver is one of the most liveable cities in the world, and it has more in common with New Zealand than you might think — mountains, ocean, coffee culture, and a laid-back attitude.

Your Matches in Vancouver

| Date | Kickoff (PDT) | Match | Round | |------|---------------|-------|-------| | Sun, June 21 | 6:00 PM | New Zealand vs Egypt | Group G | | Fri, June 26 | 8:00 PM | New Zealand vs Belgium | Group G |

Five days between matches. That is enough time to explore the city properly.

The Time Zone Situation

Vancouver is PDT (UTC−7) during the tournament.

  • Vancouver is 19 hours behind New Zealand (NZST, UTC+12)
  • A 6 PM PDT match (June 21) = 1 PM the next day in New Zealand
  • An 8 PM PDT match (June 26) = 3 PM the next day in New Zealand

Jet lag reality: This is a 19-hour time difference. You will feel it. Plan to arrive at least 3 days before June 21 to adjust.

Tips:

  • Vancouver has extremely long daylight hours in late June — sunrise around 5:10 AM, sunset around 9:20 PM. Use the sunlight to reset your body clock.
  • Melatonin is available over-the-counter at any pharmacy in Canada. Take it at 9–10 PM local time.
  • Do not nap past 3 PM. Force yourself to stay up until at least 9 PM on arrival day.

Where to Find Kiwi Community

The All Whites Supporters

Look for The Tiki Tour supporters' group online and on social media for organized meetups and march-to-the-match events. The Kiwi expat community in Vancouver is small but enthusiastic.

Pubs That Will Feel Like Home

  • The Pint Public House (Gastown) — Big screens, good beer selection, match-day atmosphere
  • Moose's Down Under (Yaletown) — Aussie/Kiwi bar. Yes, you will have to share with the Australians. They play in Vancouver too (June 13).
  • Craft Beer Market (Olympic Village) — 100+ beers on tap, big screens, 10-minute walk from BC Place

Coffee

You are from the country that popularized the flat white. Vancouver takes its coffee seriously — you will not suffer here.

Best flat whites in Vancouver:

  • Nemesis Coffee (Gastown) — Arguably the best specialty coffee in the city
  • Revolver Coffee (Gastown) — Multiple single-origin options, rotating roasters
  • 49th Parallel Coffee (Main Street / Kitsilano) — Local roaster, excellent quality
  • Matchstick Coffee (multiple locations) — Consistent, well-pulled shots

You will not find Marmite easily. Bring your own.

Getting Around

SkyTrain to BC Place

Take the Expo Line to Main Street–Science World Station — this is the only route to BC Place on match days. Trains every 2 minutes during match periods.

DayPass: $11.95 for unlimited rides. Or tap your credit/debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) directly at fare gates.

Exploring the City

  • Stanley Park — Feels like a miniature version of home. Temperate rainforest, seawall, ocean views. Bus or walk from downtown.
  • North Shore Mountains (Grouse Grind) — If you want a proper hike. Take the SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay then bus #236 to Grouse Mountain.
  • Sea-to-Sky Highway to Squamish/Whistler — If you have a day between matches (June 22–25), rent a car and drive the Sea-to-Sky. Stunning mountain and ocean scenery.

Food and Drink

What to Expect

  • A casual meal costs ~$24 CAD, but after 12% tax and 15–20% tip it becomes $31–33
  • A pint of craft beer: ~$9 CAD
  • Fast food combo: $14–16 CAD
  • The NZD/CAD exchange rate as of early 2026 is roughly 1 NZD = 0.85 CAD, so prices are slightly cheaper than home

Where to Eat

  • Check our Best Restaurants Near BC Place for match-day dining
  • Granville Island Public Market — Fresh seafood, baked goods, diverse food stalls. Feels like a better version of a weekend market back home.
  • Japadog — Japanese-fusion hot dogs, uniquely Vancouver, $7–10
  • Fish and chips: Go Fish (Fisherman's Wharf) near Granville Island. The best in the city.

Drinking

  • Drinking age is 19 in BC
  • Vancouver has an incredible craft brewery scene. The Mt Pleasant brewery district (Main Street between 2nd and 7th Ave) has 8+ breweries within walking distance.
  • You can legally drink in 31 Vancouver parks and 7 public beaches — no glass containers though.

Practical Details

Currency

Canadian Dollar (CAD). ~1 NZD = 0.85 CAD. Credit/debit cards accepted virtually everywhere — many places are cashless. Always pay in CAD, not NZD, when the terminal asks.

Cell Phone

Your NZ phone will roam on Canadian networks but at steep rates. Get an eSIM before you fly — Airalo ($15 USD for 5 GB) or Holafly (unlimited data) are the best options. See our SIM Card Guide.

Weather

Late June: 18–21°C (64–70°F) during the day. Similar to a warm Auckland day. Evenings drop to 11–13°C. Bring a light jacket. Rain is possible but unlikely in late June.

Safety

Vancouver is very safe for tourists. The one area to avoid is the Downtown Eastside (Main & Hastings area) — do not walk east from Gastown at night. See our full tips in the budget guide.
