Vancouver World Cup Guide for Egyptian Fans
Egypt is playing New Zealand on June 21 at BC Place. If you are an Egyptian fan making the trip to Vancouver, this guide is written specifically for you.
Vancouver is not Cairo. But it is more welcoming than you might expect. There is a small but active Egyptian and Arab community here, halal food is easy to find downtown, and the city is one of the most walkable and safe in North America.
Matches You Need to Know
Egypt plays one group stage match in Vancouver:
- New Zealand vs Egypt — June 21, 6:00 PM PT at BC Place (Group G)
If Egypt advances from Group G, there is a chance of a Round of 32 match in Vancouver on July 2. Keep your schedule flexible.
Other Group G matches played in Vancouver:
- New Zealand vs Belgium — June 26, 8:00 PM PT at BC Place
Even if you only have tickets for the Egypt match, consider staying for the Belgium game. The atmosphere will be electric and tickets may be easier to find on resale.
Halal Food Near BC Place
This is probably your biggest concern. Good news: Vancouver has excellent halal options within walking distance of the stadium.
Our top picks for Egyptian fans:
- Moltaqa Moroccan Restaurant (8-min walk) — The best sit-down halal restaurant near BC Place. Tagine, couscous, lamb. Book 2 weeks in advance for match days.
- Donair Dude on Robson (5-min walk) — Quick, cheap, 100% halal. The chicken donair is the move.
- Paramount Fine Foods (12-min walk) — Spacious, family-friendly, trusted Middle Eastern chain.
- Cazba Persian Grill (15-min walk) — Saffron rice and kebabs worth the walk.
Read our full halal restaurant guide for more details, walking directions, and match-day tips.
⚠️ TIP: If you are cooking at your Airbnb, Superstore on Marine Drive and No Frills on Commercial Drive both carry halal meat sections. There are also several halal butchers on Commercial Drive (the "Little Italy" area, which is ironically also home to many Middle Eastern shops).
Mosques and Prayer Spaces

- Masjid Al-Jamia (West 8th Ave) — The largest mosque near downtown. About 20 minutes by transit from BC Place. Friday prayers are well attended.
- Islamic Information Society of BC (Parker St) — Smaller, east of downtown. About 15 minutes by transit.
- UBC Musalla — If you are staying near the university, there is a dedicated prayer space on campus.
For match days, there may be temporary prayer spaces set up near the FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park. Check local community announcements closer to the tournament.

- SkyTrain goes everywhere you need. Get a Compass Card at any station and load it with $20-30 for the week.
- BC Place is directly at Stadium-Chinatown Station (Expo Line)
- The Canada Line connects the airport (YVR) to downtown in 25 minutes
- Walking from most downtown hotels to BC Place takes 10-20 minutes

Weather in June
Vancouver in June is beautiful. Expect:
- Daytime highs: 18-22 C (64-72 F) — warm but not hot
- Evenings: 12-15 C (54-59 F) — bring a light jacket for evening matches
- Rain: Possible but unlikely in June. Vancouver's rainy season is October-March.
If you are coming from Cairo in summer, you will find Vancouver refreshingly cool. Pack layers.
Money and Practical Tips
- Currency: Canadian Dollar (CAD). As of early 2026, roughly 1 USD = 1.35 CAD.
- Tipping: 15-20% is standard at restaurants. This is not optional in Canada — servers rely on tips.
- Language: English. Some French signage but everyone speaks English. Arabic is not widely spoken outside the communities mentioned above.
- Safety: Vancouver is very safe. Downtown is walkable at all hours. Normal city awareness applies.
- SIM cards: Buy a prepaid SIM at the airport from Chatr or Lucky Mobile for about $25-35/month with data. Or use eSIM services like Airalo before you land.
- Power outlets: Canada uses Type A/B plugs (same as US/Egypt). If your devices use European plugs, bring an adapter.
The Bag Policy
BC Place has a strict clear bag policy. Read our complete bag policy guide before match day. Do not show up with a backpack — you will be turned away.
